What is a Free School?
Ramsgate Arts Primary School was set up by a group of individuals who recognised the need for good primary school places in Ramsgate. With a rising local population, Ramsgate schools were feeling the strain and unable to educate all primary school aged children in Ramsgate. Ramsgate Arts Primary School opened its doors to children on September 2015.
Free Schools are non profit-making, independent, state-funded schools which are set up by a wide range of proposers – including charities, universities, businesses, educational groups, visionary teachers or committed parents – anyone who wants to make a difference to the educational landscape. Legally, a Free School is also an academy, which means the funding comes direct from central government rather than through the local authority. Free Schools are also governed by charity law.
